Praying Mantis var pionerer i New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM)-bevægelsen i Storbritannien. Efter at de i 1980 var med på den indflydelsesrige compilation "Metal For Muthas" udgav de i 1981 deres debutalbum "Time Tells No Lies". Efter en pause efter debutalbummet genforenedes de i 1990 for at drage fordel af den voksende interesse for klassisk NWOBHM, især i Japan, hvor bandet altid har haft en trofast fanskare. Oprindeligt dannet i 1973 af brødrene Tino Troy (guitar) og Chris Troy (bas), fik de nu selskab af tidligere Iron Maiden-medlemmer Paul Di'Anno og Dennis Stratton (som begge også var at høre på den førnævnte "Metal For Muthas"). Guitaristen Dennis Stratton forblev i bandet gennem 90’erne. Trommeslager Bruce Bisland fuldendte line-up’en, og sanger Mark Thompson-Smith erstattede Di’Anno. Den første koncert (på to CD’er), optaget i Nagoya i 1993, er en autentisk og ærlig liveoptagelse fra deres turné for albummet "A Cry For The New World" med klassikere som "Cheated" og "Captured City". I november 1998 vendte bandet tilbage til Nagoya; deres koncert er dokumenteret på CD’erne 3 og 4. Nu med sangeren Tony O’Hora i front og stadig med Stratton, Bisland og Troy-brødrene i besætningen, turnerede de i forbindelse med udgivelsen af albummet "Forever In Time".
